The Braves have entered the month of September on a wave of confidence. They’ve won five of their past six games, and are now looking to extend their winning streak to five games as they take on the Phillies tonight.
John Gant is the starter for the Braves tonight. This will be his fifth start of the season, and his first start since a late-June appearance against the Indians. Gant only lasted two innings in that start, so here’s hoping that things go a lot better for him tonight. This will also be Gant’s first career appearance against the Phillies, so it’ll be interesting to see how Gant approaches his opponents tonight and vice versa.
Meanwhile, the Braves and their suddenly-potent offense will once again have to deal with Vince Velasquez. Velasquez has lasted six innings in both of his appearances against the Braves this season, and the two teams split victories in those two games. Velasquez is normally a better pitcher at Citizens Bank Park than he is on the road, but that hasn’t been the case in his past two starts in Philadelphia. Both the Dodgers and Cardinals scored five runs on him during his last two home starts, and the obvious hope is that the Braves will be able to keep that string of rough home starts going for Velasquez tonight.
