Mariners claim David Freitas off waivers from Braves

The World Series is still going on and the Front Office situation for the Braves remains in limbo, but the 40-man roster keeps evolving. Or, well, shrinking, to be more exact.

After Micah Johnson was claimed yesterday by the Cincinnati Reds, today it was the Seattle Mariners’ turn to pilfer the Braves’ 40-man roster.

The 28-year-old Freitas is a longtime minor league veteran, drafted all the way back in 2010. After bouncing around numerous minor league systems, the Braves were the fifth organization to take a chance on him, signing him to a minor league deal last November. Freitas appeared in 72 games for AAA-Gwinnett, and finally made his major league debut last season as the Braves worked through some wear-and-tear down the stretch on their primary catching tandem of Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki, collecting 17 plate appearances in across six games.

Freitas is moving on to his sixth major league organization. As a weird minor fact, Freitas was once actually traded for Kurt Suzuki (back in 2012), and was also part of a trade for Jim Johnson (back in 2013). Both Suzuki and Johnson are under contract to play for the Braves next season.

The Braves’ 40-man roster now contains just 38 players, and will lose another after the World Series as R.A. Dickey becomes a free agent given the Braves’ decision to decline his option. (Dickey will likely be retiring unless he gets a suitable offer to pitch close to his Nashville home.)
