Atlanta Braves listed as significant longshot to win NL East, NL Pennant

Expectations are mixed for the 2017 Braves but everyone seems to agree that winning the NL East would be shocking.

Spring Training is well underway and the Atlanta Braves are a very interesting team in advance of the 2017 MLB season. Handicapping markets are equally intrigued by Freddie Freeman and company, with a 71.5-win projection quickly giving way to a (much more reasonable) 74.5-win number in the most recent Las Vegas release from the Westgate SuperBook.

Now, the good folks at Bovada have released their NL East and NL Pennant odds and the Braves are, predictably, seen as a longshot in both cases. Atlanta comes in at 16-to-1 to claim division glory, with the Washington Nationals (5-to-7) and New York Mets (8-to-5) sitting atop the heap as favorites.

Here is the full list:

Washington Nationals 5/7

New York Mets 8/5

Miami Marlins 12/1

Atlanta Braves 16/1

Philadelphia Phillies 20/1

Beyond that, the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs are back to defend their crown and, as you may expect, Kris Bryant’s team is the favorite to win the NL Pennant. The Braves actually come in at 40-to-1 when it comes to this kind of grand expectation and, if we’re being honest, that might not be high enough.

Still, absolutely anything can happen in the MLB Playoffs so, if you believe the Braves can squeeze into the field with a Wild Card spot, you can close your eyes and pray for a miracle here. With the way this team is built for beyond 2017, this kind of handicapping doesn’t really come into play but it does provide a window into the thinking of the smart people who set the lines and context never hurts.

Here is the full list of NL Pennant odds from Bovada:

Chicago Cubs 7/4

Los Angeles Dodgers 5/1

Washington Nationals 5/1

San Francisco Giants 6/1

New York Mets 8/1

St. Louis Cardinals 11/1

Pittsburgh Pirates 20/1

Colorado Rockies 22/1

Miami Marlins 33/1

Atlanta Braves 40/1

Arizona Diamondbacks 50/1

Philadelphia Phillies 66/1

San Diego Padres 66/1

Cincinnati Reds 75/1

Milwaukee Brewers 75/1

Be careful out there, folks.
