Remember last Wednesday when Matt Kemp’s two-run double in the 12th inning helped give the Braves their first win of the season just two games in?
Things haven’t really gone Atlanta’s way since then.
Kemp is now on the disabled list, and the Braves have lost their last five games heading into tonight’s matchup with the Miami Marlins. Atlanta will call on southpaw Jaime García to try to end the losing skid as he goes up against Miami’s Tom Koehler.
García is 0-1 on the season with a 6.00 ERA after an outing against the Mets last Thursday in which he allowed four earned runs on six hits while walking a pair of batters and not recording a single strikeout over six innings pitched.
In order to be successful, the Braves will likely need offensive production as García has now allowed at least four earned runs in five of his past eight starts dating back to last season.
Koehler received a no-decision in the lone start he has made for the Marlins in 2017. Last Thursday, he pitched five innings against the Washington Nationals while allowing one run on four hits and recording four strikeouts to accompany his three issued walks. He’s 3-5 with a 3.71 ERA in his career against the Braves.
Offensively, Nick Markakis has had the most success in his career against Koehler as his lifetime batting average against the right-hander is .588 over 17 at-bats. Freeman has a .219 mark over 32 at-bats against Koehler with one home run and three RBIs.
Tonight’s game will mark the end of an eight-game road trip to start the season for the Braves as they will return home to open up SunTrust Park against the San Diego Padres on Friday.
