The Braves’ win streak of five games is no more after they lost a very weird game against the Nationals on Tuesday night. With that being said, the beauty of baseball is that you don’t have to wait too long for the next game to start, so the Braves will have another chance to hopefully get another streak of wins going.
Of course, it’s going to be very tough since the Nationals proved that they are clearly better at this whole baseball thing than the Padres are. They’re a very good team and they haven’t fallen victim to the slow starts that have taken hold of plenty of perceived contenders around baseball. However, the Braves have something going for them today that could give them a solid chance at victory — Julio Teheran is starting today.
Teheran has gotten off to a great start this season. He went 14 consecutive innings (and 23 if you count last season) without giving up a run to start this season, and only has two earned runs under his belt so far this season. Additionally, Teheran has pitched pretty well at home against the Nationals — MLB.com noted that Teheran has given up three runs or fewer in seven starts against Washington at home. If that keeps up and the offense continues to hit relatively well, then the Braves will have a decent start at winning tonight.
While Teheran has had success against Washington at home, there is a catch to that, and it’s the presence of Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy. In 36 plate appearances, Bryce Harper is currently hitting 13-31 against Teheran with three doubles and five homers. Meanwhile, Murphy has gone 8-20 with four doubles and a dinger. Those two will clearly be the danger men for the Nationals against Teheran, and if he can work around those two then there’s a good chance that Atlanta will be in good shape this evening. If not, then watch out.
While most of the Nationals have had a wealth of experience facing Julio Teheran, the same can’t be said for the Braves when it comes to Washington’s starter for the night, Joe Ross. Of course, that’s expected when you’ve only been around for a couple of seasons and haven’t run into the Braves all that often. Additionally, tonight will be the 2017 debut for Joe Ross, so the Braves will be the first team that gets to test and see what type of stuff Ross will have this season.
The Braves didn’t look completely over-matched in last night’s loss to Washington, so the obvious hope is that with Teheran going, they’ll be able to stay in the game and pull out a victory against Washington’s fifth starter. Also, here’s hoping that the umpiring doesn’t steal the show tonight as well.
