Montgomery Biscuits 3, Mississippi Braves 2- 10 Innings
- Matt Withrow, SP: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 K
- Michael Mader, RP: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 R, 2 K
- Adam Brett Walker, LF: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI
The only game in the system was a low scoring extra inning affair where Mississippi came up on the short end as Montgomery 2B Michael Russell led off the bottom of the 10th with a solo homer off Michael Mader. Mader had pitched a pair of solid relief innings in the 8th and 9th prior to giving up the long ball. Of course that came well after Matt Withrow left after five strong innings. Withrow gave up a pair of runs- just one earned though- on just four base runners through those five innings.
This game actually raised Withrow’s ERA on the year to 1.71 as he’s gotten off to a very good start to the year after an uneven year for Carolina last year- he had a 3.80 ERA, but did post a 1.39 WHIP. So far Withrow has thrown 21 innings, giving up 9 hits, 7 walks, 5 runs, 4 earned runs, and striking out 19. That’s good for a 1.71 ERA and an 0.76 WHIP, and opponents are hitting just .143 against him. It’s too early to draw any definitive conclusions, especially when he only threw 48 strikes among his 82 pitches in this one, but he bears watching.
At the plate it was a very quiet night. Recent demotion Adam Brett Walker’s two run homer was the only time the Braves got on the board. It’s the second homer in 12 at bats since he was sent down from Gwinnett- and including his time in Gwinnett he has seen three of his seven hits on the year go over the fence. Outside of him the next best performance at the plate came from catcher Kade Scivicque, who went 1-2 with a walk and a sacrifice. Carlos Franco, Joey Meneses, and Keith Curcio had the rest of the hits for the Braves with one apiece.
