The Braves will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday in Pittsburgh as they send Julio Teheran to the mound against Pirates ace Gerrit Cole. While the Atlanta offense was scarce in New York, the troubles have turned to the pitching and defense in the first two games against Pittsburgh. The club will look to solidify those issues, hopefully avoiding the costly errors that have plagued them thus far.
Julio Teheran looked great on Opening Day, giving the Braves six shutout innings before the bullpen imploded in the seventh. He finished with six strikeouts and allowed just four hits against the Mets. He’ll look to continue that hot start against the Pirates, against whom he owns a career 3-1 record with a 3.51 ERA. Fun fact: Teheran pitched 7.2 no-hit innings against the Pirates in a 2013 start that is still the best-pitched game of his career to this point.
Gerrit Cole began his season with a rough start in Boston, where he allowed five runs over five innings of work. Cole pitched well in the early going, but the Red Sox struck for all five of their runs in the fifth and ended Cole’s day on a sour note. He’ll look to bounce back against a much less imposing Braves lineup that will be without cleanup hitter Matt Kemp on Sunday. Cole is 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA in his career against Atlanta.
