Just yesterday, the Braves made a fairly major decision regarding their roster by placing the struggling (to put it lightly) Bartolo Colon on the disabled list. It appears as though Sean Newcomb will replace him in the rotation while he remains on the disabled list (given the timing of the DL stint, how long he will remain “hurt” is definitely in question).
Now it appears that another player on the roster who has not exactly been performing well on the disabled list, although the presence of an actual injury seems to be more evident.
The #Braves have placed Adonis Garcia on the 10-day DL due to a sprained left ring finger. Lane Adams has been recalled from Gwinnett.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) June 7, 2017
Apparently Adonis aggravated his finger/wrist on a swing late in the game on Tuesday and he had not played much of late, so it is possible that he has been nursing this injury for a few days. He was seen Wednesday wearing some sort of protective sleeve to protect the injured area so it definitely appears to be more than a phantom injury...or his finger is where his success gland is located and it ruptured some time in the not too recent past...either way. Adonis has certainly struggled this season with a .247/.282/.351 line while being worth -0.4 WAR on the season thus far.
There is no word on the severity of the injury, but given that it is being characterized as a sprain seems to imply that he won’t need surgery or any other sorts of invasive treatment. In his place, Lane Adams has been recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett for his second stint with the team. In 41 games for Gwinnett this season, Adams has posted a .268/.315/.444 line with 5 home runs, 25 RBIs, and stolen 15 bases. Given that Adams has exclusively played in the outfield this season, it appears that Rio Ruiz will be getting the lion’s share of the playing time at third base for the foreseeable future.
