Welcome to Talking Chop, where the Braves are unable to beat the worst team in baseball, but the focus is all Sonny Gray trade rumors, all the time. Or, non-trade rumors, as it were.
On cue, we have another in that department, courtesy of Mark Bowman:
Gray is a longshot for the Braves. Fulmer is among the others they've evaluated, but it's highly unlikely the Tigers will deal him tomorrow https://t.co/hen5HUDmGJ
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) July 30, 2017
The Yankees remain the favorites for Gray, even though there’s the distinct possibility that erstwhile-as-of-a-few-days-ago Brave Jaime Garcia, already acquired by them, would have to shift to the bullpen if a trade for the Oakland right-hander is indeed consummated. With the Dodgers also still in the mix, and the Athletics’ asking price sufficiently high that no trade agreement has yet been reached, it makes sense that the Braves remain a darkhorse candidate to land his services.
Meanwhile, per said Bowman tweet, the Braves have also looked into Michael Fulmer, but the Detroit pitcher is likely to cost a metric boatload in value, so it makes sense that he’s probably staying put this trade deadline.
As always, stay tuned, and not just to see whether the Braves will actually get swept by the Phillies tomorrow.
