Braves trade Sean Rodriguez to Pirates

Atlanta’s crowded infield just got a little less crowded

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves continued their busy Saturday by trading utility man Sean Rodriguez back to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Braves signed Rodriguez away from the Pirates this past offseason in hopes that he would provide some right handed power while playing a utility role all over the field. All that changed when he and his family were involved in an automobile accident that involved a stolen police cruiser before the season.

It was originally thought that Rodriguez might miss the entire season but he worked his way back early and returned to the field last month.

The emergence of Johan Camargo made Rodriguez expendable and the deal with the Pirates was reportedly struck after Pittsburgh claimed him off revocable waivers.

The Braves are reportedly receiving infielder Connor Joe from the Pirates.

Joe has slashed .240/.338/.380 in 74 games with the Pirates Double-A affiliate.

UPDATE

The Braves have officially announced the deal. Jace Peterson has been recalled from Gwinnett to take Rodriguez’s spot on the active roster.
