It is no secret that Julio Teheran has had an underwhelming year for the Braves but it hasn’t been all bad and the 26-year-old righty is looking to cap the season at home off right. Sean Newcomb pitched beautifully in last night’s game only allowing two runs to the Phillies who are 12-5 against the Braves this season. After struggling most of the season in SunTrust Park Julio Teheran has bounced back well of late and has allowed three or less runs in his last three home starts.
Julio’s season has consisted of inconsistency, mostly at home. Julio has posted a 4.52 ERA in 2017 with a respectable 7.34 K/9 but an uncharacteristic 3.49 BB/9 this season. Julio is at 996.2 career innings pitched and will most likely reach the 1000 IP mark in today’s game which is a great accomplishment at the ripe age of 26. Julio’s key to win today is the same it has been all year for him; If he can control home runs allowed he will pitch like 2016 Julio. Julio has been strong against the Phillies in the past and an advanced feel for his slider of late has him looking a lot more comfortable on SunTrust Park’s mound.
The Braves will face Henderson Alvarez who is coming off his first start since 2015 with the Marlins. The Braves have enjoyed hitting off Alvarez over his career as he has a 5.70 ERA against Atlanta. Alvarez (27) is still on the comeback trail from injury and got roughed up in his first start against Oakland, a game that saw him surrender two home runs and four earned runs in five innings. With Braves center fielder Ender Inciarte just seven hits away from 200 on the season expect the Braves to come out swinging.
Just 10 more games to go in the inaugural season of SunTrust Park!
