The Braves rookie right hander has had his struggles up to this point but of late seems to be figuring things out. In Lucas Sims last two starts he has allowed a combined three runs and struck out six in each outing. Really only one start this season has been bad and that was against the Chicago Cubs back on September 2nd. Luiz Gohara pitched beautifully against the Marlins in last night’s game before another bullpen collapse ended up costing Atlanta the win. Lucas is one of the more polished rookies to come out of the Braves minor league system not walking many guys and also not giving up a ton of home runs.
Sims’ season has been a whirlwind after coming up from Gwinnett. He has posted an ERA with the Braves of 4.85 but that is far from accurate as to how he has pitched in his short time in Atlanta. At still just 23 years old it is possible for Lucas to reach that No. 3 starter status that he has been pegged with as he has moved through the Braves farm system. Lucas’s key to win today is just the usual, control the walks and limit the home runs and you stand a good chance to win. His fellow rookie Luiz Gohara dominated the Marlins for the first six innings of last night’s game and Lucas is looking to do the same to end a very productive season.
The Braves will face off against Giancarlo Stanton who sits just one home run away from 60 on the season. Stanton would become just the sixth player to accomplish that feat. The Braves as a whole will face Odrisamer Despaigne who has not fared well against Atlanta this season giving up five runs in just 3 2/3 innings. Despaigne has compiled a 1-3 record with a 4.21 ERA. Ender Inciarte is at 201 hits on the season good enough for third in the league behind Charlie Blackmon’s 210 and Jose Altuve’s 203. Atlanta has not had a player finish in the top two since 1974 with Ralph Garr coming up shy of Rod Carew.
It’s Saturday, let’s have a fish fry, shall we?
