Newcomb, Braves look to start off hot against slumping Marlins

The Braves are looking to help the Marlins continue their recent slide.

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The Braves were able to manage just one win against the Rangers in their last series. Atlanta has found it difficult to win games of late and since reaching .500 against the Diamondbacks at 45-45 they’ve gone 16-32. Tonight’s game will feature Dan Strailey who is 9-8 this season with a 3.91 ERA and Sean Newcomb who is coming off a good game against the Cubs that saw him go 5 innings with 7 strikeouts and 2 earned runs.

In Sean’s six starts before his start against the Rockies he had not given up more than 3 runs. Sean is having a good year by rookie standards. He is having a little bad luck reflected by a .317 BABIP but is making up for it by stranding 77.1% of runners. His biggest difference between the minor leagues and Atlanta is his HR/FB rate. For the entirety of his minor league career he had never had a HR/FB% over 6.7%. (Aside from rookie ball where he pitched 3 innings) and in Atlanta his HR/FB rate is 13.5%. So lets hope tonight Sean can control the home runs allowed against a lineup that loves to hit them. Fangraphs SaberSim for Sean Newcomb tonight is as follows:

The Braves will face off with familiar foe, right hander Dan Strailey. Strailey has been phenomenal since coming over from the Reds in trade. Strailey has stumped the Braves in three starts this season not allowing more than two earned runs to the Braves in any start. However, of late as the Marlins have begun to skid so has Strailey. Look for him to come out aggressive as the Marlins are desperately trying to climb back into the Wild Card race. Fangraphs SaberSim for tonight’s game is as follows for Strailey:

Let’s hope the win in game 2 yesterday will give the Braves some momentum. Also, our thoughts are with Miami as Hurricane Irma approaches as we were just reminded with Harvey how devastating those storms can be.
