Braves to call up Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Perez before Monday’s game, per report

Perez will provide depth behind the plate as Flowers and Suzuki recover from injury.

The Braves are expected to call up Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Perez before Monday’s game with the Nationals, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Sanchez, who was signed by the Braves a few weeks ago after being released by the Tigers, figures to be the club’s No. 5 starter until Luiz Gohara recovers from an ankle injury. Sanchez won’t have to make a start until April 10 with numerous days off on the schedule. He will likely serve as the long-man out of the bullpen for the next week. The veteran righty tossed 105 innings with Detroit last season and posted a 6.41 ERA (5.33 FIP).

The Braves sent Ryan Schimpf to the Angels on Saturday night in exchange for Perez. The 27-year-old catcher hit well in Triple-A last year, although he’s been unable to replicate that success in the big leagues. With Tyler Flowers on the DL and Kurt Suzuki likely needing a few days to recover after being hit in the hand by a pitch, Perez will serve as the backup to Chris Stewart.

Look for an official announcement to come from the Braves on Monday. It will be Sean Newcomb on the mound as Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals come to town.
