[Updated] Aaron Blair underwent surgery on his right shoulder to repair capsule tear

Aaron Blair’s road back to the major leagues has been delayed as he underwent shoulder surgery to repair a capsule tear

MLB: Spring Training-Atlanta Braves at Pittsburgh Pirates Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Update: Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the surgical procedure was to repair a capsule tear, as well as to clean up part of the rotator cuff. Aaron Blair will miss the entire 2018 season as part of the recovery from the procedure.

Baseball is a lot of fun for players and fans alike, but sometimes it can be brutal and unfair.

Coming out of a spring training that saw him fail to secure an initial big league spot in teh Braves’ rotation or bullpen, Aaron Blair made his 2018 debut with the Gwinnett Stripers recently and during that debut, he was apparently injured while covering home plate on a wild pitch. The initial reporting was that it wasn’t expected to be a serious injury, Max Fried was called up from Gwinnett to fill in, and that was that.

Well, at least that is what we thought. Today we learned that it appears that the injury was more serious than just a jammed shoulder as he had to go under the knife.

There is no sense in speculating exactly the degree of Blair’s shoulder injury for the moment, but it is fair to say that since it required surgical intervention...he will be out for a while. The important thing, in this moment, is that it appears as though that Blair is in good spirits during what has to a be a really frustrating time.

In 103 appearances in the minor leagues, Blair sports a minor league ERA of 3.79 and has 510 strikeouts in 565 innings. His major league career has been a struggle thus far with a 7.89 ERA in 73 innings (16 games), but hopefully he will be able to come back from surgery and make another run at the big leagues.
