Anibal Sanchez injures leg in pre-game warmups

Well, things in the Braves’ rotation could get interesting now

There has been a lot of exciting, or at the very least interesting, news on the Braves today with Jose Bautista signing a minor league deal and Jesse Biddle getting called up from the minors to replace Jose Ramirez who was placed on the DL.

We should know better than to think that there could be some bad news coming to balance things out. During pre-game warm-ups, Sanchez went down to the ground with an apparent injury. Initial reporting/guesses are that he grabbed his hamstring.

While it is obviously WAY to early to speculate the severity of the injury, when players and training staff surround a guy on the ground in a non-contact situation...that is usually not the best of signs. Neither was this.

The Braves have several options available to them in the case of a prolonged absence for Anibal. Luiz Gohara is currently rehabbing in the minors and should be back and available by early May, so shortish stint of Lucas Sims or Max Fried would make sense as a bridge to Gohara’s return. Conversely, if the Braves weren’t comfortable with either in the rotation, Alex Anthopoulos did speak glowingly of Mike Soroka in an interview earlier today.

With Sanchez set to start tomorrow’s game, the Braves will have to make a decision quickly in order to get someone who is on regular rest. With the extra off day from the horrid weather of Chicago, in theory the Braves could skip his spot in the rotation for now to buy some more time, although whether the other pitcher’s routines being thrown off would be an issue remains to be seen.

More to come as this develops.
