Braves look to earn series split with Reds

It is not fun to lose to the Reds twice in one series and three times would just be shameful.

Less than 24 hours after Ronald Acuña Jr. made his Major League debut the Braves are back at it in an afternoon matinee against Cincinnati. Acuña went 1-for-5 in his first game last night with a single and some solid baserunning which helped Atlanta pull in their first win against the Reds.

The first two games of this four game set did not go Atlanta’s way as the bullpen posed a problem with their increasing walk rate. Last night was a big improvement as Jesse Biddle, Dan Winkler and A.J. Minter combined to walk just one player.

Sean Newcomb will be making his fifth start of 2018 today. The big lefty has been very solid for the Braves with a 3.74 ERA to go along with 27 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. Even with this great work things are bound to get even better for Newcomb as he has been able to have this success despite a .364 BABIP working against him.

His opponent will be Homer Bailey who is coming off a rough 2017 campaign that saw him sport a 6.43 ERA. This season his ERA looks good at 3.68, but with a closer look his peripherals suggest he has been lucky to this point with just a .227 BABIP against.
