The Braves will begin a new three game set with their in division rivals from Miami tonight as Atlanta sends Sean Newcomb to the mound to duel with Marlins starter Dan Straily.
Sean Newcomb, the Braves 24-year-old lefty stud, will be making his 9th start of 2018 tonight (weather permitting). Newk has been elite on the mound so far this season with a sparkling 2.51 ERA and the peripherals to match at a 3.08 FIP along with 54 strikeouts in 46.2 innings this season. Newk is currently riding a 20 inning scoreless streak dating back to his start against Cincinnati on April 26th and will look to continue his early bid for a Cy Young award tonight against the fish.
Update - Matt Wisler has been recalled by the Braves and will get the spot start for Atlanta tonight. This appears to just push everyone back a day for some early extra rest. Wisler has started two games this season an owns a 3.75 ERA and 4.73 FIP.
His opponent will be Dan Straily who has had a rotten season to this point. Straily is allowing home runs at a torrid pace and owns a 5.54 ERA and an astoundingly bad 8.68 FIP. Straily’s walk numbers are through the roof as his K numbers have gone through the floor. It also doesn’t help that he has to face the Braves tonight who have tormented him over his last 7 starts to the tune of a 5.24 ERA.
The Braves will be hoping for a window to get the game in tonight as it looks like even more rain is headed towards SunTrust Park tonight. Stay tuned as Atlanta looks to stretch their division lead.
