Matt Wisler to start Friday’s game against Marlins, Max Fried oddly demoted

Your guess is as good as mine.

Matt Wisler will start Friday night’s game against the Marlins after being recalled from Gwinnett.

Max Fried, who was called up from Gwinnett on Thursday in order to start in place of injured Mike Soroka before the game was eventually postponed due to rain, was sent back down.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Sean Newcomb was originally scheduled to start tonight’s game, but it appears he will now pitch with an extra day’s rest on Saturday.

This will be Wisler’s third start of the year for Atlanta. His first one against the Mets was encouraging (7 innings, one run, eight strikeouts and no walks) but his second one against the Reds was very poor. His most recent start with Gwinnett was a strong one as he allowed just one run over seven innings.

I’m really not sure why the Braves would elect to bring up Wisler when Fried was already up and prepared to make the start (or just start Newcomb as originally scheduled), but as we noted yesterday, the Braves may start using the 10-day DL and minor league options to limit pitcher innings.
