After a maddening defeat on Tuesday evening, the Atlanta Braves will look to pick up a series victory against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon. It is an early first pitch (12:10 pm ET) and that always leads to a bit of weirdness, but the Braves send Sean Newcomb to the hill and that provides comfort.
Newcomb enters the day with a 2.59 ERA and that comes on the heels of back-to-back fantastic outings. In his last start, the left-hander allowed only one run in seven innings against the Orioles and, prior to that, Newcomb slammed the door with six shutout innings against the Padres.
While the Reds present some more issues (particularly in the middle of the lineup) than the last two opponents, Atlanta does hold the pitching advantage in this spot. The Reds will deploy Luis Castillo, who holds an unsightly 5.70 ERA on the season across 16 starts and 83.2 innings. In short, the Braves should, at least on paper, be able to take full advantage and that brings optimism with regard to picking up a win.
The good folks in Las Vegas install Atlanta as approximately -140 favorites in this spot and the expectation should be a victory. Baseball is weird, though, and that always has to be stated on the record.
See below and stay tuned.
