Ronald Acuña Jr. was cleared to hit off a tee and do some light jogging back in Atlanta on Friday. He will start to begin ramping up his activity in the coming days and barring a setback could return soon.
“We’ll just see where he is once we get back home after [Monday’s off-day],” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “He feels good. It was good to just get him started.”
Sean Newcomb will start in place of Julio Teheran on Sunday with Mike Foltynewicz penciled in for Tuesday’s series opener against the Mets. The team is undecided on who might start Wednesday but the options include Mike Soroka, who is currently on a rehab assignment, or Kolby Allard who is putting up good numbers at Gwinnett.
“He’s an option at any point in time if it would fall when you needed somebody,” Snitker said. “It’s kind of nice to have options. We haven’t had that for a while. It’s a good thing.”
The Angels were dealt a blow on Friday when Shohei Ohtani was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a grade 2 sprain of the UCL. He has already underwent a PRP and Stem Cell injection and will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks.
Stephen Strasburg exited Friday’s start after just two innings and is set to undergo an MRI on his right shoulder Saturday.
The Mets’ injury woes continue as they placed closer Jeurys Familia on the 10-day disabled list Friday due to a sore right shoulder. Familia has a 2.48 ERA and 14 saves in 28 appearances this season.
Another injury note for New York, Noah Syndergaard has been on the disabled list for nearly two weeks due to a strained ligament in his finger. He was slated to return on Sunday but was scratched from his start after he experienced more swelling.
