Sean Newcomb, Braves look to get back on track against Diamondbacks

Newcomb looks to bounce back from a couple of rough starts and end the first half on a good note.

Losers of 7-of-10, the Atlanta Braves need a win in the worst way on Saturday when they continue their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Braves got another splendid pitching performance from Anibal Sanchez in Friday’s opener but were unable to muster enough offense in a 2-1 loss. Atlanta’s recent struggles have taken a toll as they now trail the Philadelphia Phillies by 1.5 games in the NL East standings.

If the Braves are going to get back on track Saturday, then they are going to need a bounce back performance from Sean Newcomb. Newcomb has turned in a solid first half and is one of the big reasons for Atlanta’s success but he has struggled in back-to-back starts allowing 10 runs in just 6.1 innings. Newcomb has struggled with his command walking nine over that span. That comes after he walked a total of 10 batters through five starts in June.

The Braves will have their work cut out for them against Diamondbacks’ starter Zack Greinke who has turned in a solid first half and is headed back to the MLB All-Star Game. Grieinke has allowed three runs or less in each of his past five starts. He ran up a high pitch count and exited after just 4.1 innings allowing six hits and two runs last time out against the Padres.
