We will send out another update as soon as a makeup date is announced so stay tuned.
Ronald Acuña Jr. was the hero of last night’s ballgame after his best friend and Braves phenom second baseman Ozzie Albies was forced out of the game with injury early on. Anibal Sanchez was nails as he has been all season as the Braves were able to take the opening win to what they hope is a second half run to the playoffs.
Tonight the Braves will send out big left hander Sean Newcomb to go up against Gio Gonzalez and the Nationals as Atlanta looks to take back their division lead and give themselves some extra breathing room with the Nationals in third place.
Newcomb has been fantastic for the Braves in 2018 pitching to the tune of a 3.51 ERA and 4.15 FIP. The young gun has struck out 97 batters in 105 innings this season and will start his 20th game for Atlanta today hoping to continue winding that ERA back down below 3.00.
His opponent will be lefty Gio Gonzalez who has been a constant within the Nationals rotation for some time now. Gonzalez owns a 3.72 ERA and 3.99 FIP this season, but has been walking more batters than Nats fans have become accustomed to seeing from him during his tenure with D.C.
These are two very similar pitchers with a good pitch mix and strong frames. The only difference is that Newcomb’s career is just getting started and will likely see him improve, whereas Gonzalez is on the back slope of his career and is likely beginning to wind down soon.
This should be a fun match for all involved as the Braves look to keep the possibility of a sweep open. Let’s baseball shall we?
