The Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals hope to dodge the weather and wrap up what would be a brief two-game set at Nationals Park on Sunday. Atlanta took Friday’s series opener but rain washed out Saturday’s game. Sunday’s forecast is calling for the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms as well so it is very much going to be a touch and go situation.
If the game does happen then we will be treated to an All-Star pitching matchup. The Braves will go with MIke Foltynewicz while the Nationals will counter with Max Scherzer.
Folty will be looking to get back on track after allowing five runs in each of his past two starts. That is a bit deceiving as he was cruising in his last outing against the Blue Jays before running into trouble in the seventh inning. Devon Travis eventually hit a grand slam which put a serious damper on Folty’s final line but the Braves went on to win the game comfortably.
Scherzer has faced Atlanta twice this season and has allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings.
The Braves are expected to be without second baseman Ozzie Albies who left Friday’s game early due to hamstring tightness. The Braves called the exit “precautionary” but they are expected to play it safe with him especially in what could be rainy conditions.
