Kolby Allard to debut as the Braves look for another win over the Marlins

Another of Atlanta’s top pitching prospects will make his major league debut.

The Atlanta Braves will try to make it three straight wins Tuesday night when they continue their series against the Miami Marlins. Atlanta fell behind early but won the opener 5-3 behind a pair of homers by Freddie Freeman and Ronald Acuña Jr. They will turn to rookie Kolby Allard who will be making his major league debut in Tuesday’s game.

Allard was the Braves first-round pick back in 2014. He spent all of last season as a 20-year old in Double-A where he was fifth in strikeouts. He has made 18 starts for Gwinnett this season while compiling a 2.80 ERA in 109 1/3 innings. He has struck out 87 batters while walking 33.

The Braves are going with Allard in a spot start as a way to gain everyone in the rotation an extra day of rest. Sean Newcomb through a career-high 134 pitches in Sunday’s near no-hitter and everyone at this juncture of the season could probably use an additional day. It is also an opportunity to get Allard some experience at the major league level.

Miami will counter with right-hander Dan Straily who has been pitching well of late. Straily has a 2.84 ERA in July and has allowed three runs or less in six straight starts. He faced the Braves back on May 18 and allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings.
