Camargo comes through in the clutch as Braves beat Phillies, 6-5
The Atlanta Braves battled back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 Friday night at SunTrust Park. The Braves increased their division lead to 7.5 games and reduced their magic number to 2. They can clinch the NL East division with a win on Saturday.
This adjustment made all the difference for Acuna
Ronald Acuña Jr. has had a huge second half and an adjustment he made with his batting stance during the All-Star break might be a big reason why. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman talked with hitting coach Kevin Seitzer about those adjustments.
“The first day after the break, the timing with his swings was night and day,” Seitzer said. “I think he went, ‘Holy cow, I’m seeing the ball so much better, and I feel better and I’m on time.’
”Then, the confidence came quickly. We started seeing him chase less sliders and swing at fastballs up. When he started making them come to him in the zone, the kid is a really good hitter on secondary stuff. If you hang something on the first pitch, he’s going to smoke it.”
For Markakis, this is what Braves’ rebuild has been all about
Nick Markakis knew what he was getting into when he signed with the Braves four years ago. The 2018 season has made it all worth it.
“When I first came here, that’s what they told me,” Markakis said. “They told me, (20)17-18 is what they want. The first couple years were tough. I’ve been part of rebuilding processes before. It’s put one foot in front of the other. You can’t jump ahead.
Newcomb skipped as Snitker opts for hot hands
Brian Snitker didn’t mince words when asked about the decision to skip Sean Newcomb’s turn in the rotation this weekend. He simply went with the guys that were pitching well. Newcomb will likely get another start before the end of the regular season but will work out of the bullpen for the remainder of the homestand.
“We just wanted to go with the guys who have the hotter hands really,” Snitker said. “We’ll stick [Newcomb] in the bullpen for the rest of the homestand. After that, we’ll regroup and see where we’re at.”
