The Daily Chop: Soroka finishes sixth in NL Cy Young Award voting

The Braves rookie dazzled in his rookie campaign, and was recognized accordingly by Cy Young voters.

The Braves were on the receiving end of a brilliant season from right-hander Mike Soroka in 2019, and the rookie placed highly in the NL Cy Young Award balloting released on Wednesday. Soroka finished sixth, including one third-place vote, landing him just one spot behind eventual World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg. Jacob deGrom was the winner, giving him back-to-back Cy Young Awards.

Soroka was the subject of criticism earlier this week as he stood between Pete Alonso and a unanimous Rookie of the Year Award. His one first-place vote was a sticking point for greedy fans, but as the Cy Young ballot would attest, his season was widely considered one of the best in baseball. The 22-year-old settled in as the ace of the Atlanta staff early on, and performed as such right through his lone playoff start in St. Louis.

Soroka placing this highly this quickly is encouraging with regards to his future prospects, and will hopefully foretell continued success. Armed with immense poise and pinpoint control, Soroka appears set to flourish moving forward, and is among the most significant building blocks in the Braves organization.
