The Daily Chop: Braves shutout in Gold Glove chase

Neither Ozzie Albies or Josh Donaldson brought home any fielding hardware.

Awards season officially got underway Sunday night with the Rawlings Gold Glove announcement. The Atlanta Braves had a pair of finalists in Ozzie Albies at second base and Josh Donaldson at third but neither came away with an award. This was the first time since 2015 that the Braves didn’t have at least one Gold Glove winner as Ender Inciarte’s streak of three straight wins came to an end.

Stephen Strasburg opted out of the final four years of his contract with the Nationals by Saturday’s deadline. Strasburg will certainly be issued a qualifying offer by the Nationals on Monday and there is hope within the organization that the two sides can work out an agreement that will keep him in Washington for the long term.

One club that is getting ready to make a run at Strasburg is reportedly the San Diego Padres. Strasburg was born and raised in San Diego and the Padres have a young team that is in need of a top of the rotation arm.

Yu Darvish and Jason Heyward will be staying with the Cubs after neither chose to opt out of their current deals. Darvish is owed $81 million over the next four years while Heyward is due $86 million over the next four seasons.

The New York Yankees have an agreement with closer Aroldis Chapman that will add a third year and $18 million to his current deal.

As expected, Jake Arrieta will remain in Philadelphia after exercising a $20 million player option for 2020 this weekend.

Giants’ left-hander Tony Watson exercised his player option for 2020 and will return to San Francisco next season.

Jedd Gyorko is headed for free agency after the Los Angeles Dodgers declined his $13 million team option for 2020. Gyorko will instead receive a $1 million buyout from the club.
