The Atlanta Braves made some significant roster moves on Monday bringing back Nick Markakis and Tyler Flowers while parting ways with longtime pitcher Julio Teheran. Apparently there are more changes on the way as it was reported on Tuesday that the organization is once again shaking up its player development staff.
The Athletic’s David O’Brien reported that director of player development Dom Chiti would be reassigned and that assistant director of player development-personnel AJ Scola was let go entirely. No replacements have been named yet and there could be additional changes or departures.
Some of this is no doubt a continuation of GM Alex Anthopoulos continuing to overhaul the organization. However, in today’s game, it is critical that they get this right. While the Braves minor league system has produced several key major league players of late and still has a number of talented prospects approaching, the lower minors have been stung thanks to the sanctions issued by Major League Baseball for transgressions in the international market by former GM John Coppolella. As Atlanta tries to restock its minor league system, it will be critical that they have a solid development system in place. This is just another added storyline that we will be tracking throughout the offseason.
