Kevin Gausman takes the mound as Braves return home to face Mets

On the heels of a snow-out in Denver, the Atlanta Braves will return to action on Thursday evening. This time around, Brian Snitker’s team will be operating out of their own clubhouse at SunTrust Park, as the New York Mets arrive for the first of a four-game weekend set between divisional rivals.

Since opening the season in disappointing fashion, the Braves have righted the ship in a big way, winning seven of the last eight games. In attempting to keep that positive momentum, Atlanta will send veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman to the hill in the series opener.

Gausman got a late start to the campaign but, in his first outing, the 28-year-old was electric in silencing the Miami Marlins. In that start on Apr. 5, Gausman navigated seven innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only two hits and two walks, while striking out seven hitters. While it would be fair to say that New York’s lineup packs more punch than that of Miami, that was a thoroughly encouraging sign and the Braves enter this evening with confidence as a result.

In opposition, the Mets will send left-hander Steven Matz to the hill as they open a 10-game road trip. Though it is a fairly small sample, Matz has enjoyed success (2.75 ERA in seven starts) against Atlanta in his young career and, in 2019, the 27-year-old has allowed only one run in 10.1 innings across two starts.

From a Las Vegas perspective, the Braves are currently -130 favorites against the Mets in their home ballpark and, as always, the folks in the desert are pretty smart about these things. Anything can happen in the world of one baseball game but Atlanta seems to be in a relatively favorable position to extend its winning streak.

Stay tuned throughout the day (and evening) for all the latest.
