Let’s just face it, the Braves have looked pretty terrible on the offensive side (save Ronald Acuña’s outburst) against the Mets, but where they’re really failing is on the pitching side after three great series by the starting staff.
Sean Newcomb will look to end that streak today when he faces off against Jason Vargas. Newcomb has been really good in his career against the Mets, posting a 1.82 ERA over three starts last season. Most importantly look for Newcomb to have success against a very heavy left handed lineup.
This matchup bodes well for the Braves as Acuña continues to be red hot and has had good success in the past against Vargas (5-8 with a triple and homer). Vargas is currently carrying an ERA of 9.00. His last appearance was out of the bullpen against the Twins when he surrendered four runs on four hits in just a single inning.
The Mets improved this offseason so they’re not as much of a push-over anymore, but the Braves can ill afford to keep losing division games. We’ll see how they fare against the aging Vargas, but it will be all up to how far the pitching can carry them today. Stay tuned.
