This might have gotten lost yesterday, but congratulations to Jasseel De La Cruz on his promotion to Florida after four strong starts in Rome.

Gwinnett Stripers 6, Indianapolis Indians (Pirates) 2

Box Score

  • Austin Riley, 3B: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB
  • Adam Duvall, LF: 1-3, HR, RBI, BB
  • Travis Demeritte, RF: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, OFA
  • Kolby Allard, SP: 5.1 IN, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

We’ve been mentioning for about a week now that Austin Riley has been making adjustments. He’s cut down on the strikeouts from the start of the season and he starting to make more solid contact with the baseball after seemingly just getting under the ball earlier in the season. He hit a two-run homer in the third inning Thursday to put the Stripers ahead early. Riley now has three-multi hit games over his last seven. His average is clawing it’s way up and his OPS is back over .700 too.

Adam Duval followed Riley’s homer with one of his own. Gwinnett led 3-0 at that point and that was really all they needed. Travis Demeritte collected two hits and two RBIs in the game. Also, he threw out a runner at home to get his second outfield assist on the season.

Kolby Allard did enough to get the win today. He was nowhere near perfect, allowing 10 base runners in less than six innings. He ran into trouble multiple times, but credit to Allard that he was able to get out of the jams with minimal to no damage. One positive thing for Allard this season is a huge increase in his GB%. He’s at a 50 percent ground ball rate for the year, and today he had five ground ball outs to four fly outs.

Florida Fire Frogs 9, St. Lucie Mets (Mets) 10

Box Score

  • Riley Delgado, 3B: 2-6, 2B, 2 RBI
  • Izzy Wilson, RF: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 outfield assists
  • William Contreras, C: 3-5, E, SBA
  • Greyson Jenista, CF: 1-2, HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB
  • Nolan Kingham, SP: 5.2 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

This was a deflating end for the Fire Frogs. After Troy Bacon lost the lead in the seventh, the Frogs fought back and managed to get a two-run lead. Then in comes Brandon White who had not given up a run all season. White strikes out two in the eighth and things were looking good. Leadoff guy strikes out in the ninth, and then Quinn Brodey hits a double. The next batter reaches on a throwing error by William Contreras, but a weak pop out made it two on and two out. Unfortunately, the first pitch was then hit right over the fence for a walk off by the Mets. The bullpen in total gave up six runs in three innings of work.

This was a high scoring game for both teams. Six different Frog hitters had multiple hits. Greyson Jenista is still working on his new swing, but hit his first home run of the season and collected three walks. Just when you think Izzy Wilson will never figure it out, he manages to pull you back in. He collected two hits including a double to go along with a walk. It would be nice if this really kick starts something special for Wilson. He’s just too talented to keep hitting around .200.

Rome Braves 3, Kannapolis Intimidators (White Sox) 2

Box Score

  • Trey Harris, LF: 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
  • Greg Cullen, 2B: 1-2, BB, 2 R
  • Logan Brown, C: 1-4, RBI
  • Odalvi Javier, SP: 5 IN, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
  • Dilmer Mejia, RP: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

If you love strong pitching, then this was the game for you. Odalvi Javier went against a solid pitcher in Konnor Pilkington, who was a third round pick in 2018. Pilkington dominated the Braves all night as he allowed just three base runners in his six innings of work. Javier pitched valiantly, but did give up a couple of runs over five innings. While Javier gave up a lot of baserunners, he worked around it and kept his team in the game. Delmer Mejia and Lukas Young came in and fired four shutout innings and Lukas picked up a save.

The offense was shut down until Pilkington left the game. With two men on base in the eighth inning, Trey Harris hit a line drive double off hard throwing Zack Burdi to give the Braves a 3-2 win.
