Foltynewicz set to return to mound against Rockies

Mike Foltynewicz will be making his season debut today after missing nearly the first month of the season due to right elbow soreness.

Mike Foltynewicz will be making his season debut today for the Atlanta Braves after missing essentially the first month of this season will bone spur issues in his right elbow. This debut has been long anticipated after “Folty” had a dominant breakout season in 2018. Last season he posted career bests with a 2.85 ERA in 31 starts to go along with a winning record (13-10).

The big 27-year-old right hander recorded 200 strikeouts for his first time ever at any level of baseball, coming to life by ditching his sinker and going slider heavy. Folty is one of a select few Major League starters that regularly sit in the upper 90’s with his fastball, but his opponent today does so as well.

For Colorado, Jon Gray will take the mound looking to continue his bounce back season after a pretty ugly 2018 campaign. While Gray’s peripheral numbers don’t look all that bad (3.47 xFIP) he did catch a bit of the home run bug last season, allowing 1.41 per nine innings.

Gray’s saving grace might just be that he has dominated Atlanta every time he’s faced them compiling a 1.64 ERA over five career starts.

Let’s hope for the Braves sake that today turns out differently. The Braves are 3-7 over their last ten games and really need a jolt to get back on track. Perhaps Mike Foltynewicz can help there against what is a sub-par Rockies offense.
