Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: Pache, Waters stay hot; Duvall’s homer steak continues

There was only two games on the Braves farm, but plenty of offense to be had on Monday.

MLB: Spring Training-Houston Astros at Atlanta Braves Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Monday was a quiet one on the farm with only two teams in action, but there was plenty of offense to go around. Gwinnett piled up the runs in a big victory, while two young Atlanta Braves outfield prospects continue to hit everything thrown their way.

Gwinnett Stripers 9, Charlotte Knights 2

Box score

  • Adam Duvall, LF: 2-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR
  • Travis Demeritte, RF: 1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB
  • Sean Newcomb: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB

There wasn’t a lot going on for Braves prospects for Gwinnett on Monday night with Austin Riley getting the night off, but some veterans made waves with big days. Newcomb put together his second-straight strong start and has now gone 13 innings without issuing a free pass over that span. Jonny Venters spelled Newcomb, striking out a pair in his inning of work, while recently added Wes Parsons went two, allowing an unearned run on no hits, two walks, while striking out three.

Adam Duvall is not of this planet right now. He slugged another home run, his sixth in his last five games. He’s now on a seven-game tear in which he’s raised his average to .315 and OPS to 1.095. Rafael Ortega (2-for-4, three runs, and an RBI) and Ryan LaMarre (2-for-5, two RBI) were amongst those with multiple hits as the Stripers piled up 11 hits to score nine runs.

Probable 4/30 Starter: Bryse Wilson

Mobile BayBears 5, Mississippi Braves 3

Box score

  • Drew Waters, RF: 3-for-4, 2 R, .887 OPS
  • Cristian Pache, CF: 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .934 OPS
  • Kyle Mulller: 5 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 K

Now we get to talk some prospects. Waters and Pache continue to rake, joining Jonathan Morales (2-for-3) as the M-Braves to rack up multi-hit games Monday afternoon. Pache drilled his fourth triple of the season — tops in the Southern League — and now has five two-hit performances in his past eight games, raising his average to .321 on the season. Waters has hit safely in his last four, seeing his average rise from .295 to .319 over that span. Two of Waters hits were doubles, giving him a Southern League-best 11 on the year.

For Muller, the walks woes continued, as he’s now walked four or more batters in his six starts on the season. It was the second time this season that Muller walked more than he struck out and after taking a huge step forward last year, there have certainly been some question marks raised in 2019. Despite the command issues, Muller was able to limit runners and left the game in a position to pick up the win. Connor Johnstone and Jordan Harrison were able to hold the lead, combining on three scoreless innings, but Josh Graham imploded in the ninth, allowing Mobile to walk it off scoring three runs.
