The Braves got their road trip off to a good start defeating the Phillies 9-2. Atlanta not only picked up a game on Philadelphia but also Washington who lost at home to the Dodgers.
The news wasn’t all good for Atlanta however. Nick Markakis exited during the sixth inning of Friday’s game after he was hit in the wrist by a pitch thrown by Philadelphia’s Cole Irvin. He will undergo tests on Saturday but Brian Snitker and company didn’t sound optimistic.
The Kansas City Royals are reportedly closing in on a trade for reliever Jake Diekman with the Braves and the Dodgers as the teams that have shown the most interest.

More bad news for the Nationals as Max Scherzer is once again experiencing stiffness in his back. Scherzer went on the injured list during the All-Star break due to soreness in his back. He received a cortisone shot to help reduce inflammation and returned earlier this week. He underwent an MRI and this issue is reportedly not related to the inflamed bursa sac that he was dealing with previously. It is not yet known if he will be able to make his next scheduled start.
Ben Zobrist has indicated to the Cubs that he is ready to return to action. Zobrist has been on the restricted list since early May while dealing with a family matter.
Chicago also picked up veteran left-hander Derek Holland from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for cash considerations. Holland is expected to operate out fo the bullpen for the Cubs.
