Braves designate Luiz Gohara for assignment

The former top prospect had quite the fall from grace.

Atlanta Braves v. New York Yankees

The Braves have officially announced that the team has DFA’d former top prospect Luiz Gohara today following a flurry of trade deadline moves.

Gohara’s 40 man roster spot was needed following the Braves trades for Mark Melancon and Shane Greene today. Gohara has not pitched at all this season and was shut down for the remainder of 2019 after undergoing arthroscopic surgery earlier this month. Gohara has had a rough history with injuries as he pitched just 77.2 innings in 2018 after starting the season on the IL with an ankle issue that never properly healed.

Gohara was once heralded as the Braves best left handed pitching prospect when he made his meteoric rise to the Majors back in 2017, but due to the constant injuries and weight issues is no longer among the top Atlanta prospects. Gohara was originally a member of the Mariner’s system and was traded to the Braves in January of 2017 for Mallex Smith and Shae Simmons.

Gohara pitched 49 career Major League innings for the Braves between 2017 and 2018. He owns a 5.33 career ERA and 3.47 FIP worth 1.0 fWAR.
