The Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers will meet Sunday in a rubber match of their three-game series at SunTrust Park. The Dodgers took Game 1 8-3 behind a late barrage of home runs. The Braves got back-to-back homers from Josh Donaldson and Adam Duvall and a rare good bullpen performance to finish off a 4-3 win.
Max Fried will take his turn on the mound Sunday for Atlanta. Fried has been lights out through three August starts allowing just two earned runs over his last 17 1/3 innings to go along with 18 strikeouts. Fried allowed six hits and one earned run over six innings in his last start against the Mets.
It is expected that the Braves will see two of the Dodgers’ top pitching prospects on Sunday. Rookie Tony Gonsolin will be recalled to start Sunday’s game and is LA’s sixth best prospect per MLB Pipeline. Gonsolin has appeared in three games this season (two starts) allowing 11 hits and five earned runs over 14 innings. He relies on a four seam fastball that averages 94.5 mph and a split finger / slider combo to keep hitters off balance. Gonsolin’s last appearance in the majors came on August 5 where he started and fired six shutout innings against the Cardinals where he allowed two hits and struck out seven.
Fellow rookie Dustin May is also scheduled to pitch in relief on Sunday. May is the Dodgers No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline. He had originally been scheduled to make the start but Los Angeles is planning to shift him into a relief role for the postseason. May has put up great numbers through three starts posting a 2.65 ERA (2.74 FIP) while striking out 15 over 17 innings.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. ET and the Game can be seen on Fox Sports South.
