The Braves were able to come away victorious last night after a 14 inning marathon. Tonight it will be Max Fried’s turn to see if he can continue the win streak that now sits at six consecutive games.
Fried has been Atlanta’s second best pitcher this season by fWAR totals as he’s compiled 2.2 in 131.1 innings. He’s also posted 134 strikeouts while really cutting down on his walk rate (2.81 BB/9) which has propelled him into the clear number two starter on this team. Fried has well surpassed the highest inning total of his career (118.2 in 2013) at any level, but remains sharp which is very encouraging to see.
His opponent isn’t necessarily a slouch either.
Zack Wheeler’s 4.40 ERA is very deceiving. Wheeler owns 153 strikeouts over 149.1 innings and has been one of the Mets’ best starters all season long. The 29-year-old Wheeler has been vastly under-performing his peripherals (3.52 FIP), so he won’t be an easy task for the Braves today. However, coming off a DeGrom start, one would assume that anything is easier than facing that guy.
These Braves are going supernova right now with a lineup comprised of mostly second and third string guys. It is really impressive to watch and makes it even more enjoyable to see Dansby Swanson, Austin Riley, Brian McCann and Nick Markakis on the way back soon. That paired with the resurgence of Mike Foltynewicz makes this Braves squad terrifying to any team in the Majors.
We shall see if they continue the fun this evening on Players Weekend. Stay tuned.
