Mike Foltynewicz got started off on the wrong foot, but quickly recovered for a great performance this evening.
Washington was the first team to scratch during the first inning when Anthony Rendon doubled home Trea Turner who walked to lead off the game.
With an early 1-0 lead, Austin Voth went to work and was fantastic for the Nats. He didn’t run into any trouble at all until the 6th inning when Ozzie Albies, Josh Donaldson and Nick Markakis hit consecutive singles to tie the game at 1.
For the Braves Folty was equally impressive after his first inning miscues and proceeded to pitch six one run innings to go with five strikeouts.
The real action started in the seventh inning during the Braves at-bat, specifically when Charlie Culberson came up to bat. After consecutive walks to Brian McCann and Dansby Swanson, Culberson was brought in to pinch hit. During the at-bat Culberson took a 91 MPH fastball right off the face. The umpires added insult to injury saying Culberson went around which prompted Brian Snitker to vehemently argue and was immediately tossed. Culberson was then removed on a cart after not being able to continue.
The team rallied around Charlie though and Ronald Acuna Jr smacked a two run double to left field giving Atlanta a 3-1 lead. Ozzie Albies and Markakis then followed with two consecutive RBI singles to give the Braves a 5-1 lead going into the final frames.
Atlanta continued to add on in the eighth inning as Rafael Ortega knocked in Swanson who walked to start the inning. Ortega found his way home on an Albies sacrifice fly to bring the score to 7-1.
The Braves didn’t stop there as they added on in the top of the ninth. After Donaldson and Markakis hit singles, Austin Riley smacked a two run triple into the left field corner. Swanson capped off the scoring with a single up the middle to score Riley and bring the final tally to 10-1.
The Braves got three solid innings from Sean Newcomb, Luke Jackson and Josh Tomlinson to help finish things out. Atlanta’s Magic Number now sits at 4 and the Braves will look to narrow that to 2 tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned.
