The Braves have called up catcher John Ryan Murphy from Triple-A. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Braves officially placed Charlie Culberson on the 60-day IL with a fractured cheekbone after being hit in the face with a pitch and being ruled out for the rest of the season.
The #Braves today selected the contract of C John Ryan Murphy from Triple-A Gwinnett and placed INF/OF Charlie Culberson on the 60-day injured list with a fractured right cheekbone.

The Braves acquired Murphy at this year’s Trade Deadline from the Diamondbacks in return for cash. Murphy has played for the Yankees, Twins, and Diamondbacks and has been known for his defense more than his offense throughout his career. Murphy has done little to shake that reputation in Gwinnett by slashing .177/.250/.234 in 50 plate appearances this season. However, he will allow Brian McCann and Tyler Flowers to presumably get some rest before the playoffs begin, as Francisco Cervelli has been sidelined with a lacerated finger.
