The Braves snapped a three-game losing streak and reduced their magic number to one with a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Mike Soroka allowed two runs over five innings while Ronald Acuña Jr. launched his 40th home run of the season.
Acuña is now the youngest player ever to record a 40 homer, 30 steal season. He is just three steals away from joining the 40-40 club.
MLB Pipeline named Drew Waters and Ian Anderson as the Braves’ Prospects of the Year on Thursday. Waters enjoyed a breakout season at the plate while advancing to Gwinnett. Anderson also ended the year at Gwinnett and posted a 3.38 ERA in 26 combined starts.
An enjoyable look back to September of 1999 when Chipper Jones dominated a three-game series against the New York Mets on his way to the MVP award.
The Chicago Cubs activated closer Craig Kimbrel from the injured list prior to Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kimbrel had been sidelined due to elbow inflammation.
The Red Sox continue to retool their front office. Former Braves GM Frank Wren and special assignment scout Eddie Bane are the latest to depart. Wren was the senior VP of baseball operations under departed GM Dave Dombrowski.
The Phillies and catcher J.T. Realmuto have mutual interest in a contract extension this offseason. It has been a disappointing season for Philadelphia overall but Realmuto has performed as expected hitting .277/.328/.496 with 25 home runs.
