Braves vs. Phillies, September 9, 2019: Game Thread & Discussion

The Braves will have their hands full with Aaron Nola

Apologies for bringing up speaking points from a forgotten era, but there was a time early in the season where it looked like the Phillies were well-positioned to run away with the National League East, and that the Braves might be cruising for a third-place finish.

My my, how the tables turn.

Now that the season has had a chance to play itself out, the two prospective destinies have flip flopped as the Phillies instead find themselves in third place, 14 games behind the first-place Braves. The season series between these two is knotted at six, but the Braves’ offense has punished Phillies pitching over the past nine games, posting 76 runs and winning six.

Granted, the Phillies will lead off this four-game series tonight with Aaron Nola on the mound, so runs will likely be at a premium. The Braves will counter with Mike Foltynewicz.
