Brian Snitker announced Wednesday that Bryse Wilson will start Game 4 of the NLCS on Thursday against the Dodgers. Snitker said that they would wait and see how things come out in Games 3 & 4 before deciding on their pitching plan for the remainder of the series.
Wilson appeared in just six games for the Braves in 2020 posting a 4.02 ERA and a 4.85 FIP. He struck out 15 and walked nine in just 15 2/3 innings. Wilson however pitched better in his last two appearances which were his only two starts of the season at the Major League level. In those outings he allowed eight hits and one run over eight innings while striking out nine.
Snitker said that he wouldn’t classify Game 4 as a bullpen game and is hoping that Wilson will be able to give them at least five innings or more. It is a small sample size but Wilson has struggled against left-handed hitters who are hitting .343/.452/.600 in 85 plate appearances. The Dodgers will no doubt try to exploit that but the Braves don’t have a lot of other options. Huascar Ynoa could be an option for a potential Game 5 but could also be available if needed should Kyle Wright struggle in Game 3 or Wilson in Game 4.
Freddie Freeman update
Brian Snitker said that Freddie Freeman was fine after he was hit on the elbow by a pitch from Alex Wood in Game 2. Freeman was clearly experiencing some discomfort and Snitker said after the game that it went numb. Freeman came in for Game 3 and reported no problems and is in the lineup as expected.
Johan Camargo returns to the lineup
Johan Camargo wasn’t even on Atlanta’s NLCS roster when the series began. He will start at third base for the Braves in Game 3. Camargo was added to the roster as an injury replacement for Adam Duvall after he suffered an oblique injury in Game 1. Snitker said that adding Camargo to the lineup was a product of the matchup and that they are trying to get as many right-handed hitters into the lineup as they can against Dodgers lefty Julio Urias.
Having Camargo at third will shift Austin Riley to left field. Snitker added that he feels good defensively about having Camargo at third and Riley in the outfield.
