The inevitable happened on Thursday, as Major League Baseball announced the suspension of Spring Training and the postponement of the regular season for at least two weeks. The league will explore options going forward, but with the NBA already suspending operations indefinitely, public pressure was quickly mounting on the commissioner’s office to act quickly in response to the rapid spread of COVID-19.
The effects of cutting Spring Training short remain to be seen, along with the effects of postponing Opening Day. Players will be faced with limited time to regain their form, unless Opening Day is pushed out even further. This obviously is not ideal for the league, but the growing concern over public health and safety have necessitated drastic measures for all major associations.
