The Daily Chop: Roster Updates, Acuña, Freeman, and more

There were several notable soundbites out of Braves camp on Monday.

The Braves provided updates on several of their pitchers on Monday, sharing the current status of relievers Jacob Webb, AJ Minter, and Chris Martin. The club also revealed potential rotation options, with specific mentions of Kyle Wright, Sean Newcomb, Felix Hernandez, Bryse Wilson, and Touki Toussaint. Atlanta has a wide range of options to fill the void created by Cole Hamels, who will likely miss all of April with shoulder soreness, according to reports on Monday.

With so many options to fill the void created by Hamels and the open fifth starter spot, Atlanta can be particularly selective when they break camp. Sean Newcomb entered camp as a presumptive favorite for one of those open spots, but maybe the most impressive member of the spring rotation has been Kyle Wright. The right-hander has been lights-out thus far, and while Spring Training is hardly a perfect setting for competition, he has positioned himself very well early on.

Touki Toussaint is a long-shot to make the rotation, but he has also drawn rave reviews. His ability throw strikes consistently will likely decide his fate, but even if he is limited to a bullpen role, the club could benefit from an improved Toussaint in 2020. The Braves are well-stocked with options already on the 40-man roster, and have top prospect Ian Anderson awaiting his opportunity as well.
