Newcomb crumbles as Braves fall 13-8
Sean Newcomb was abysmal on Monday, which prompted a major change in the starting staff. Newcomb has been a source of frustration for many, especially as a starter, but his latest implosion brought about his demotion to the alternate training site. Newcomb allowed eight runs while recording just four outs on Monday. The Braves offense was quiet until the ninth, when they exploded for seven runs to bring the final tally to 13-8.
Braves option Sean Newcomb to minor league camp
As noted above, Newcomb is headed to the alternate training site at Gwinnett. The Braves will look for other options to fill his spot in the rotation. As noted by Dave O’Brien, the Braves would be hard-pressed to find anyone who could perform worse than Newcomb has this season.
‘It’s your turn’: Touki reflects on Fernández
The heartbreaking loss of Jose Fernandez remains a difficult subject for Braves right-hander Touki Toussaint, who became friends with the late star while preparing for the 2014 MLB Draft. Toussaint is taking full advantage of his opportunity at the major league level, and remembers his time with Fernandez as he became better acquainted with life in baseball.
“I sat there and just talked to [Fernández] for about three or four hours before he went to get ready,” Tousssaint said. “After that, it just kicked off. I’d go to all of the batting practices and talk to him.”
