Braves recall Bryse Wilson to the active roster

If you were watching last night’s game, you were probably not surprised to see the news that Sean Newcomb was headed for the alternate training site. It wasn’t just that start, though, as Newcomb had struggled mightily in the rotation even when things didn’t go as poorly. Sometimes he was able to wiggle out of trouble, sometimes....well, games like last night happened.

That part of a roster move we knew last night...what we didn’t know was who was going to be taking his spot on the roster. There were a lot of possibilities with Bryse Wilson, Patrick Weigel, Tucker Davidson, and Jasseel de la Cruz all being varying degrees of possible. The Braves went with the most familiar face.

Bryse’s tenure as a major leaguer has been...iffy to say the least. The biggest issue has been that his secondaries had lagged behind enough that he was very reliant on his fastball. If that pitch was particularly on, he could make short work of guys. If not, the results were not as good. One can assume that those secondary pitches were being worked on this offseason and at the alternate site in Gwinnett, so it will be interesting to see both HOW the Braves use Bryse whether it is as a long man or in the rotation as well as what his stuff looks like.

It is easy to forget just how good this guy has been in the minor leagues as a starter. While his nine appearances with five starts in the majors has yielded a 7.00 ERA with a 27 inning sample size, he has an ERA under three in over 400 innings in the minor leagues including a 3.42 ERA in 121 in Triple-A just last year.
