The Daily Chop: Braves win fourth straight, Chacin designated for assignment

The Braves are, at least in this very early part of the season, one of the hottest teams in baseball. This pleases us.

Thanks to strong outings from Touki Toussaint and Josh Tomlin on the mound plus some offense thanks to homers from Ronald Acuna Jr. and Marcell Ozuna, the Braves won their fourth straight game with a 7-1 win over the Mets who are probably sick of playing the Braves by now.

Acuna’s day at the plate understandably got most of the attention as we have all been waiting for him to break out. In addition to the home run which got out in a hurry with an exit velo of 114 mph, he also had an RBI double in the game. We assume that this was the first of many good offensive games we are likely to see out of him.

Also, how about Marcell Ozuna? The Braves are 6-3 and a big reason why has been Ozuna’s production at the plate which currently sits as a 1.253 OPS which is, after checking my notes, quite good.

Braves select contract of Chris Rusin, designate Jhoulys Chacin for assignment

Jhoulys Chacin’s performance the other night, as well as how his appearance was managed, has been discussed quite a bit to say the least. The Braves did not mess around with the roster decision as he was designated for assignment the next morning. The Braves needed the roster spot for another arm who could throw multiple innings and Chris Rusin is who they landed on.

Ozzie Albies returns to Braves lineup Saturday against Mets

In another bit of exciting news, Ozzie Albies returned to the Braves lineup on Saturday after a brief absence. Ozzie was dealing with some soreness in his wrist, but it looks like the day off did the trick. Given that he had a hit and an RBI in the game, we are going to assume that he is doing just fine.

Brewers’ Lorenzo Cain opts out of remainder of 2020 season

In more serious news, the NL Central’s schedule has been turned on its head thanks to an outbreak of cases on the St. Louis Cardinals. It appears that the risks associated with playing this season became just too much for Lorenzo Cain to put up with and he decided to opt out of the rest of the season. We do not blame him at all.

Cardinals-Brewers series postponed

Speaking of that Cardinals outbreak, the Cardinals-Brewers series this weekend had to be postponed because the Cardinals’ positive cases which seem to be climbing every 12 hours or so. No word yet on when those games will be made up, but for the moment it looks like the team may be allowed to play next week if the outbreak doesn’t get any worse...although the odds are that it will.
