This Day in Braves History: Olympic road trip comes to an end

This Day in Braves History: August 4

1921 - Billy Southworth clubs three doubles and a homer in a 13-5 Braves win over the Cubs.

1942 - Braves pitcher Jim Tobin hits his 6th home run of the season tying the National League record for homers by a pitcher. However, he and the Braves fall to the Phillies 4-2.

1979 - Phil Niekro sets modern major league records with four wild pitches in one inning and six in one game as the Braves fall to the Astros 6-2.

1996 - The Braves end their 17-game, 20-day road trip with a 6-4 win over the Dodgers. The extended road trip is due to Atlanta hosting the Olympics. The Braves finished the trip with a 9-8 record.

2001 - Wes Helms records a pair of homers and a triple while driving in seven runs to help Atlanta to a 14-2 win over the Brewers. Helms came into the game with no hits in his last 18 at-bats.

2002 - Damian Moss and John Smoltz combine on a one-hitter in a 2-1 win over the Cardinals.

2013 - The Braves extend their winning streak to 10-straight with a 4-1 win over the Phillies behind a good performance by rookie left-hander Alex Wood. The win pushes Atlanta’s lead in the NL East to 12 1/2 games and is their second 10-game winning streak of the season.
