Matt Adams “almost certainly” headed to Injured List; Ozzie Albies may join him

It was not all good news following the Braves’ 10-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night as Brian Snitker updated the statuses of Matt Adams and Ozzie Albies.

Adams, who homered in the second inning of Tuesday’s game, appeared to pull a hamstring while running out a ball in the fourth inning and immediately left the game. Fortunately for Adams the pull did not look to be overly serious, but one that seems “almost certain” to send him to the Injured List for some time, per Snitker.

Adams heading to the IL would presumably open up a spot for Nick Markakis, who re-joined the team last week after originally opting out due to COVID-19. It is unclear if Markakis is ready to play after missing three weeks, but even if he isn’t activated tomorrow, one would assume he would not be too far behind.

The more concerning issue for the Braves is the health of Albies, whose wrist has apparently bothered him for weeks. Ozzie did not look good at the plate on Tuesday night and even batted left-handed against a left-handed pitcher — he’s a switch hitter — suggesting his wrist is bothering him more than initially believed.

The Braves would be wise to place Albies on the injured list for 10 days. Wrist injuries have a tendency to linger, and with the way the rest of the lineup is performing and the availability of Adeiny Hechavarría, Charlie Culberson and Johan Camargo on the roster, it would be foolish to risk permanent injury for a few trivial games in a pandemic-shortened season.
